In Charlotte Wells’ Oscar-nominated debut feature, “Aftersun,” queerness is presented as an open-ended and formative experience for both the father and daughter protagonists.

Two decades after the father-daughter trip, the adult Sophie (Celia Rowlson-Hall) lives with a female partner in New York. Sophie reflects on the shared joy and private melancholy of a holiday she took with her father twenty years earlier. The film is told through Sophie’s point of view and consists of scenes she had captured on her MiniDV camera during the vacation.

Vacationing with her divorced dad at a second-rate Turkish Mediterranean hotel, a thirtyish Irishman named Calum Mescal , Sophie Corio asserts herself by the joshing, rumpled chemistry she insists on keeping with him. Later in the picture, after hanging out with some boys who may or may not fancy her, Sophie finds herself locked out of the room: Calum has passed out, nude, from a late night swim that Wells captures in extreme long shot to suggest he may not have wanted to return. While plenty of films have limned the erotic overtones of mother-son White Heat, The Manchurian Candidate, Murmur of the Heart and father-daughter relationships Voyager, Somewhere, Leave No Trace they have rarely done so with the delicacy, lightness, and wit of Aftersun.
